Travel Tips

General

  1. Be sure your luggage is marked with identification on the inside and out.
  2. Make at least two lists of credit card numbers and travelers check serial numbers.
  3. Call your bank and credit card company’s to be sure your pin #’s will work in the countries you will be traveling.
  4. Bring photocopies of your passport and other travel papers as well as a few passport sized pictures, in case your documents are lost or stolen.
  5. If you plan on driving, get your car ready and investigate the local road conditions, laws and other driving requirements.
  6. Remember an address book if you plan to send out postcards.
  7. Do some research, learn as much as you can about your destination.
  8. When traveling to another country, bring about $50 in local currency so that you don't have to wait in line at a foreign exchange the moment you arrive.

Health

  1. Carry your prescription medications in their original containers. This may make it easier to get them through customs. Check prescriptions for necessary refills; bring a list with the drug’s generic name listed since the brand names available may vary by region.
  2. Bring your doctor’s name, regular and emergency phone numbers.
  3. Check your own medical coverage to see what type of coverage you’ll have when away from home. Consider purchasing trip insurance.
  4. Find out what types of vaccinations you will need to enter the country, there may also be medications you’ll need to take before, during and even after your trip. Get your vaccinations done early in case you have a reaction and need some recovery time.
  5. Bring extra eyeglasses or contacts if you have them.

Safety

  1. Keep your passport and cash in either a money belt or a money pouch that ties around your neck and can be tucked under your shirt.
  2. Carry updated pictures of your children in case they wander off. You’ll need recent pictures so others can help you look for them.
